The Lotus Esprit was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the prototype was presented in Turin in 1972. The Esprit S1 was produced from 1976. Being a leading Formula 1 constructor in the 1960s and 1970s (proudly displayed on a batch on the back of the car) the Lotus Esprit was constructed as a racing car for the road. The car featured a steel backbone chassis and a GRP bodywork in the best lightweight Lotus tradition. The engine was placed longitudinally behind the seats. The 2 Litre Lotus 907 four-cylinder engine was mated to a 5-speed gearbox which was also used in the Citroën SM and Maserati Merak. In 1977 the Lotus Esprit gained fame through the James bond Film ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ where it converted into a submarine.
